The hamlet of Kelmond is situated in the hills belonging to the municipality of Beek. Beek is first mentioned in a document dated 947 as Becha. Several historic buildings adorn the territory of Beek and one of them is Kelmonderhof. The building, made out of bricks and marlstone, dates mainly back to the 18th century. Some parts, for example the Renaissance-style gate-towers, were built as long ago as 1640.
Gaysauna Maastricht is situated in the giant hay barn of and next to the Government protected monument Kelmonderhof. The hay barn is the element of the original lease farm that was built last and is characterized by a striking solidness. The original beams in the restaurant and resting area are wonderful to see. In 1994 the building was just one big dilapidated barn with holes in the roof. Then, in 1995 licences were granted to begin a major renovation and five years later, on May 22 2000, the new sauna opened to the public.
In Gaysauna Maastricht art is an important feature. The brightly coloured artwork of Lia Weeda adorn the interior, beautiful chandeliers have been created by the Maastricht metal artist Job Langeveld and in the entrance two hanging figures immediately catch the eye, made by the artist Frank Hut. These mystical figures are detailed to perfection. Sit back in one of our comfortable chairs and take a close look at them. Also there are special art exhibits from time to time.
